A stunning Scottish island is surrounded by rich sea life, offering visitors the chance to see dolphins and porpoises – and even a glimpse of the world's largest animal.
The waters sounding the Isle of Mull of the Inner Hebrides, are home to all manner of sea creatures from the Majestic Minke Whale to the colossal Blue Whale, which can be almost 30 meters long and weigh as much as 199 tonnes.
Twenty four different cetacean species (which includes whales, dolphins and porpoises), have been spotted around the Hebrides since research began around two decades ago, according to Tobermory.co.uk.
Tobermory, Mull's capital, offers a range of boat trips to see Minkes, Harbor Porpoise, Seals and various Dolphin species, with short cruises lasting an hour and a half, to six-hour Whale watching adventures.
You can even embark on a week long excursion on a boat to give yourself the best chance of encountering the elusive sea creatures.
Minke Whale and Common Dolphin only stop by the Isle of Mull around the summer season, and others, including the Stiped Dolphin and the Fin Whale are seen only rarely.
If you're looking to stay in style, The Isle of Mull Hotel & Spa boasts 72 upgraded rooms. Among them are elegant Sea View and Retreat Suites where guests can enjoy dramatic views of Craignure Bay and enjoy the invigorating spa facilities.
The hotel's hot tubs, bucket showers, day beds, and sauna make for a cozy retreat from the cool sea air after a day of whale watching.
But if you're looking for something a bit more low-key, from camping, there are plenty of other accommodation options including glamping, other hotels, hostels, B&Bs and even castles, according to travel blogger The Chaotic Scot.
Tourists are warned that the area is popular during the summer peak period, with beds quickly snapped up by holiday makers.
Climbing enthusiasts also come to tackle Ben More, Mull's only “Munro”, the name given to Scottish mountains over 3,000 feet on the Scottish Mountaineering Club (“SMC”) official list.
But if you're planning to take it on, check local official guidance before embarking. According to a description of the mountain by AllTrails: “There are sections of very rough and steep terrain where care is needed as the path may become less distinct.
“Near the summit the path crosses loose gravel and scree and will be slippery. Appropriate footwear is required as well as warm layers and food and water. This trail is exposed to the elements and the wind can be very strong and cold.”
The same goes for the fascinating deep-sea cavern of MacKinnon's Cave, with visitors advised to follow advice and go at low tide.
Meanwhile, Lochbuie stone circle is hailed as a beautiful and striking relic of the island's ancient history, with visitors also recommending a visit to the 13th-century Duart Castle and its tearooms.
Thanks to the vast water surrounding the island you'll be able to find plenty of top-notch seafood, and tender meats produced by the island's inland hill farming techniques.
There are plenty of places for a simple hearty meal after coming in from the elements too.
Mull is reached by ferry, with three access point ferry terminals, at Killchoan, Fishnish and the main one in Oban, which is around three hours from Edinburgh by train.
