While the voice of Venom shares specific launch details for Spider-Man 2, Sony and Insomniac are keeping schtum.
Insomniac Games and Sony are being incredibly secretive with Spider-Man 2, with zero new trailers or information shared since its late 2021 reveal.
Details concerning its autumn 2023 release date let slip only a few months ago, which Insomniac and Sony soon corroborated, but they shared nothing else, not even any new screenshots or concept art.
One of the game’s voice actors, however, has been far chattier, going so far as to say that Spider-Man 2 will launch in September, following a big marketing push in August.
This claim comes from Tony Todd, who is voicing classic Spidey bad guy Venom in the new game.
Recently, he took to Twitter to share a photo of himself in a mocap studio, presumably for Spider-Man 2.
When a fan mentioned that the game ‘can’t come quick enough,’ Todd casually responded with, ‘Looks like September! Massive publicity coming in August. Commercials start dropping in August, so I’m told.’
As one of the game’s main voice actors, it is entirely possible that Todd is privy to this information. However, actors are usually surprisingly unreliable when it comes to the details of games they’re working on.
There’ve been multiple instances of voice actors sharing inaccurate release date info, in particular, such as one who claimed to have done work for Grand Theft Auto 6 and that a trailer would release soon. That was in 2021 and no such trailer has ever emerged.
That said, VGC has backed up Todd’s comments, saying that it too has heard talk of Spider-Man 2 aiming for a September launch.
This means it’ll be going up against Starfield, Microsoft’s big Xbox exclusive, so it’ll be interesting to see how this will affect both games’ launch sales.
It’s always possible, though, that plans will change between now and then, and the game could be pushed back for whatever reason. Either to give Spider-Man 2 further polish or to avoid losing any potential sales to Starfield.
Modern Marvel games do have a tendency to underperform in sales, as demonstrated with the likes of Midnight Suns and Guardians Of The Galaxy, despite both being high quality titles.
Insomniac’s Spider-Man, however, is the exception. It was the fastest-selling first party Sony game of all time until God Of War: Ragnarök launched last year and remains the US’s best-selling superhero game.
Spider-Man 2 launches for the PlayStation 5 in autumn 2023.
