A huge blaze has broken out in South Shields, with thick black smoke seen rising from a building at the Port of Tyne.
Northumbria Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service have asked members of the public to avoid the area and keep their windows closed.
A spokesperson for the fire service told ChronicleLive: “We can confirm that today (Wednesday 26th June).
“We received an emergency call at 14.13pm reporting an ongoing incident at Tyne Dock, South Tyneside.”
The fire service added: “Our first crew was on scene within two minutes of receiving the call, with six fire appliances and two aerial ladder platforms currently in attendance at the commercial premises.”
The fire at a tenanted warehouse on the port “remains ongoing but is under control”, officials have announced.
In an update on X, formerly Twitter at 7pm, Port of Tyne said the fire remains ongoing but is under control”.
“Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service are on site and controlling the area, supported by the Port's operations team,” the statement read.
“We advise all people in the area local to the fire to keep their doors and windows closed and stay away from the area where possible. We reiterate there are no reported injuries at this time.”
