Subtropical Mediterranean airflow to spark sweltering 84F heatwave | Weather | News

New weather maps have revealed that the UK will likely be hit by a subtropical Mediterranean airstream that could spark an 84F (28C) heatwave across the country next month.

The heatwave is forecast to reach its peak on July 14 when temperatures will peak at 28C in the heart of London and surrounding areas.

The hottest temperatures will be felt in the south and southeast with the likes of Swindon, Reading, and Bristol experiencing temperatures of around 23C to 25C.

Further to the southwest, the mercury will fall slightly in Devon and Cornwall to around 20C, a trend that will also be felt on the UK's south coast and in Wales.

In northern England and southern Scotland, temperatures will remain in a similar bracket of between 17C to 22C in coastal areas and high ground.

In much higher ground in Scotland, the mercury could fall as low as 14C in some places but will be milder in cities like Edinburgh and Dundee.

The latest hot peak comes as the UK makes its way through a period of varied and unsettled weather during which temperatures have fluctuated between the high 20s and high teens.

According to the Met Office long-range forecast, this trend could be likely to continue as July wears on alternating between dry weather and “unsettled” conditions.

In their forecast for the middle to the end of July, the Met Office predicted: “On balance most likely rather changeable at first, with periods of unsettled and cloudy, wet weather mixed with spells of dry and fine weather, with weather systems tending to come from the west.

This means that the west is likely to see the wettest conditions, while the east will tend to be drier.

“By mid-month, there is a signal for more settled conditions to develop, so more in the way of dry weather, although still with a risk of some rain/showers at times.

“Temperatures close to average at first, but with a greater chance of warmer than average conditions later in the period.”

This Evening and Tonight:

Through this evening and overnight, scattered showers will continue across Scotland and perhaps Northern Ireland. Cloud and patchy rain will move slowly southwards across England and Wales, with clear spells developing behind.

Sunday:

Sunday will tend to be a cloudy day, with the best of any sunshine across southern counties of England. Showers will develop as the day progresses. Generally feeling cooler.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Rain will move into the northwest on Monday, largely dry elsewhere. Brighter on Tuesday with sunshine and showers, ahead of further rain moving into the northwest Wednesday. Temperatures around average.
