Traffic on a busy motorway has been halted after a lorry carrying hay burst into flames. Horror pictures from the M6 near Coventry in the West Midlands show a lorry's trailer engulfed by a blaze as a raging inferno destroys the HGV.
National Highways says the northbound road near junction 2 is blocked and drivers are at a standstill with delays reaching two hours since 3.40pm.
Currently, it is predicted that traffic will go back to normal between 11.30pm and 11.45pm – spanning seven hours of the road's closure.
Live traffic cameras show queues backing up to nine miles. A statement from National Highways says: “There are currently delays of two hours and heavy congestion for 9 miles on the M6 northbound in Warwickshire.
“The motorway is closed within J2 Antsy Interchange (Coventry (E) A46, Leicester (M69)) due to a lorry transporting a large amount of hay which has caught fire. Warwickshire Police, Warwickshire Fire & Rescue Service and National Highways have deployed resources to the scene.”
