A huge multi-vehicle crash has caused chaos on a major highway this afternoon. The A23 in West Sussex has been closed in both directions between the M23 and B2114 at Handcross due to the collision involving two lorries.
National Highways says one of the HGVs was carrying concrete blocks which have spilled onto the carriageway, with a major operation underway to clear debris from the road.
A spokesperson said: “There is substantial clear up work required for both debris and a spillage which is currently underway. Emergency services are on scene. National Highways service providers are in attendance to assist with traffic management.”
Live traffic maps suggest queues won't ease until at least 7.15pm – with drivers urged to avoid the area and re-plan their routes.
