Donald Trump has leapt at the opportunity to stake his claim as the potential next US president just moments after Joe Biden confirmed he would step down as the Democrate candidate.
The perhaps unsurprising move has come just four months before the 2024 election is held in November. In a statement issued tonight, Mr. Biden said: “It is in the best interest of the country.”
Biden announced his decision after mounting pressure from fellow Democrats to step down amid fears that, by remaining in the race, he would hand a landslide victory to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Concerns have been raised repeatedly about his fitness to fulfill another term as president.
In a letter posted to his social media account, Joe Biden said it had been the “greatest honor of his life to serve as president” and expressed his “heartfelt appreciation to the American people” for their faith and trust.
Donald Trump has slammed Joe Biden, saying he was “not fit to serve” and “the single worst president by far in the history of our country”, after the president abandoned his bid for re-election. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Biden “wasn't capable of being president.”
He also made a gloating statement about how he claimed the move would make it “easier” for him to be re-elected once again.
In a phone call with CNN minutes after Biden announced his exit from the 2024 race, Trump said that he would go down as “the single worst president by far in the history of our country.”
The former president claims he thinks he has a better chance of winning if Kamala Harris were to replace Biden, claims CNN and is the favorite to win the election.
Trump is 8/15 to become the next US president while Vice President Kamala Harris is 23/10, according to oddschecker. Michelle Obama is 28/1 in winning the US presidential election.
Although the former First Lady has said that she is not interested in a political career, she is also being tipped by the bookies as a potential Democrat candidate at 16/1.
Kamala Harris is the bookies favorite in becoming the next Democrat candidate at 1/5 while California Governor Gavin Newsom is at 14/1.
Mr Newson took to X (formerly Twitter) to thank Biden, calling him an “extraordinary, history-making president”.
He said: “President Biden has been an extraordinary, history-making president — a leader who has fought hard for working people and delivered astonishing results for all Americans. He will go down in history as one of the most impactful and selfless presidents. Thank you you, Joe Biden.”
