Just days after taking over as Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer made his intentions for his government's relationship with the EU clear.
Speaking in Edinburgh the weekend after the election he said: “We intend to improve our relationship with the EU and that means closer trading ties with the EU, it means closer ties in relation to research and development and closer ties in relation to defense and security .
“Obviously, there are many discussions to be had and negotiations to be had. But I do think that we can get a much better deal than the botched deal that Boris Johnson saddled the UK with.”

Already putting plans in motion, Labor was accused of a “great Brexit betrayal” at the weekend over fears a new Bill will put Britain back at the mercy of Brussels.
A new plan on product safety laws is being drafted that could potentially tie UK manufacturers to the EU.
Reacting to this, former International Trade Secretary Sir Liam Fox said: “Labour has managed to diminish our energy security, promised to wreck our green belt and now has embarked on the great Brexit betrayal, bringing us back within the grasp of EU law over which we have no control.
“The people of Britain voted in the referendum for an independent sovereign nation. Now Labor has already started to trade it away for benefits unknown.”
However Labor hit back, saying the Bill “in no way” forces the UK to abide by EU rules.
Now another concern has been sparked over fishing, after Sir Keir called for closer ties to the EU and said he wanted “a better deal” to “reset” the UK's relations with Brussels.
Off the back of this, some reports have suggested that the EU will demand access to British waters to bolster UK-EU relations as the Prime Minister wishes.
This news was met with disdain, with Richard Tice MP, Deputy Leader of Reform UK, tweeting: “NO NO NO. We want our fishing waters back, not giving more away.”
