A boat carrying British tourists has overturned in Italy while the passengers were celebrating a birthday, with one reported to have tragically died. The 16m boat is believed to have capsized as a result of a “whirlwind” which struck the vessel on Lake Maggiore, on the border of Italy and Switzerland.
The majority of the 25 aboard were able to swim to safety and land on the beaches between Lisanza and Piccaluga. Other boats in the area eventually came to their aid.
Three others were taken with “not very critical” injuries, while two people were rushed to the hospital in a “moderately critical” state.
A total of 15 people received on-site medical care but did not need to be admitted to the hospital.
Responding to the emergency, seven ambulances, an air ambulance, and 118 medical vehicles swiftly arrived at the scene, while video footage captured the ongoing search efforts continuing into the night.
Lombard’s governor Attilio Fontana said in a statement: “Unfortunately there is news of some missing people.
“A whirlwind caused a very serious accident.
“The firefighters of the Milan diving unit are at work on the spot together with the guard coast, to the air rescue and to the ambulances of Areu – informs Fontana -.
“I am following with apprehension the updates of the rescue teams on the spot which I thank”.
According to Italian media outlet La Repubblica, another boat noticed individuals in the water, which prompted the alarm to be raised.
Lake Maggiore, known for its popularity among British tourists, is the second-largest lake in Italy.
