Larian Studios has other priorities but is apparently quite eager to do more with Baldur’s Gate 3 before moving on.
Given the widespread popularity of Baldur’s Gate 3, you’d think DLC would be the number one priority at Larian Studios. Earlier this month, however, studio boss and creative director Swen Vincke downplayed that possibility.
Aside from clarifying that no such expansion was in development, Vincke explained that it’d be too difficult given the scope of the base game and the Dungeons & Dragons rules it’s based on.
He didn’t entirely rule it out, though, and it turns out that the development team has been having discussions about doing more with Baldur’s Gate 3, besides the typical patches, before moving on.
The main priority is, unsurprisingly, finishing work on the PlayStation 5 version of the game, which is scheduled to launch on September 6.
Plus, the team needs a holiday, but it sounds like they’re eager to remain in the world of Baldur’s Gate 3 for a bit longer once they return to work.
‘We’ll carry on patching for a while and then we’re all going to take a holiday and then we’ll figure out what we do next,’ senior product manager Tom Butler told IGN when asked about potential DLC expansions.
‘But at the moment, we genuinely have discussions. We want to do more. We don’t know what yet.’
While Butler doesn’t mention it, no doubt getting the Xbox Series X/S version out the door takes precedence as well.
It still lacks an exact launch window, but Larian Studios is now confident it’ll arrive by the end of the year. Although this is only because Microsoft is letting them release it on Xbox Series S without split-screen co-op.
As for what form any Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC could take, it’s too early to tell whether it’ll be as free content updates, like with Divinity: Original Sin 2, or if Larian will put together a full-fledged paid expansion.
Fans did recently uncover a bunch of cut content, such as an explorable upper city area, so there’s some hope that Larian will reincorporate at least some of this content in the future.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is available for PC. It launches for PlayStation 5 on September 6 and Xbox Series X/S later this year.
