The director behind Helldivers 2 has called for ‘more compassion’ in the face of gamers who are still fanning the flames of the console wars.
Friendly fire might always be on in Helldivers 2, but developer Arrowhead has no time for anyone trying to cause fights between fellow shooters.
Arrowhead’s CEO Johan Pilestedt took to Twitter to respond to an account that compared Helldivers 2 to Halo on Sunday March 3, where he basically asked: what’s the point?
‘Why compare?’ Pilestedt wrote in response to an image that said Helldivers 2 was better than Halo. ‘Just let gamers love and enjoy both, either or neither. We need more compassion and union in the world, and less rivalry.’
When it was suggested that friendly rivalry can be a ‘great thing’ by another user, Pilestedt replied: ‘Indeed. Also in business. Neither monopoly or cut-throat competition makes the world a better place.’
If you thought this might be a chance for personal growth though, your optimism has been sadly misplaced. ‘You are awesome Piles,’ the original poster wrote in response, ‘but Halo still got DECIMATED by Helldivers.’
Earlier this month, Pilestedt said the team has no interest in adding a PvP mode to the co-op shooter because it wants to reduce ‘toxic elements from the community’.
‘We want an environment that’s supportive, fun, and where we all are fighting on the same side,’ he added.
‘We make games for people that just want to have a challenging time with friends but in a PvE setting. If you want PvP I recommend Escape From Tarkov.’
Helldivers 2 launched on PlayStation 5 and PC earlier this month and has become one of the most successful games of the year.
Its success is notable as it marks Sony’s first exclusive to have a simultaneous launch on PC, which will likely lead to more PlayStation exclusives arriving on the platform in the future – even though Arrowhead are not a first party studio.
As for the future of Helldivers 2, various leaks appear to have outed what’s in store for future updates – including pilotable mechs, a Halo-style buggy and a bunch of new weapons.
