Halo remake developer leaks ahead of ‘deep dive’ this month

More details have emerged around the rumoured remake of the original Halo, including the choice of developer.

While it hasn’t been officially announced by Microsoft, there have been rumours for years around a potential remake of 2001’s Halo: Combat Evolved.

There aren’t many details on the project, but reports suggest it may end up being single-player only and launch across PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. We already know Halo Studios is working on multiple Halo games, so it is likely one of them is a remake or remaster of some kind.

Some new details about the rumoured remake have now emerged thanks to regular Halo leaker Rebs Gaming, including who is actually making it.

According to the leaker, a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved is being co-developed by Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries) and Abstraction, a Netherlands-based studio owned by Virtuos. This has since been corroborated by XboxEra.

Virtuos at large have worked on titles like The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered and Dark Souls: Remastered, while Abstraction recently helped co-develop open world survival title Dune: Awakening with Funcom.

As listed on their website, however, they already have a history with Halo. In 2021, seven years after launch, they assisted development on Halo: The Master Chief Collection on further localisation and accessibility features. Their other projects include Mass Effect: Legendary Edition and the Stadia port of Baldur’s Gate 3.

As highlighted in the Rebs Gaming video, a former level designer at Bungie, Christopher Gaffney, is listed as working at Abstraction on a ‘high-profile unannounced AAA title’ on his LinkedIn profile. He’s been working at the studio since May 2025, and is ‘designing and developing campaign missions from concept to greybox/block-out to polish’.

While this could relate to another project entirely, Halo Studios recently announced it will be giving a ‘deep dive’ presentation on a future project on October 24, 2025 at the Halo World Championships. So there’s a chance we could see an official reveal then.

Xbox is set to celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2026, and Microsoft previously teased there’ll be some kind of Halo-related project to coincide with the milestone.

In the Xbox Games Showcase in June, Microsoft boss Phil Spencer said: ‘I’m excited to share that players will get to celebrate 25 years of Xbox with a new Fable, the next Forza, Gears Of War E-Day, and the return of a classic that’s been with us since the beginning.’

Unless a dramatic comeback for Blinx: The Time Sweeper is on the cards, it’s very likely he’s referring to a new Halo – whether a remake or a sequel to 2021’s Halo Infinite.
