Coldplay's Chris Martin has wowed a pair of newlyweds and their shocked guests by singing at their wedding dance. Sporting a beanie on his head, the star performed “All My Love” in front of stunned family and friends after the pair wed at Blithfield Lakeside Barns in Rugeley, Staffordshire, on Saturday (December 13).
The groom's mum had contacted Martin to see if he would send a congratulatory video for the happy couple. To her amazement, he replied saying he was free that night so would come and perform. Alex Brown, one of the owners of Blithfield Lakeside Barns, said: “Chris got back and said he could go one better.”
Mr. Brown told the Stoke Sentinel: “He said I'm free that night so I'll come and play the first dance. He didn't want any introduction so we said it was the first dance and he walked in and performed.”
He said the bride and groom knew Martin was coming, but it was kept as a surprise for the guests, who he said did not appear to realize it was him until the end of his performance.
Mr Brown added: “Chris was great and it was amazing for the bride and groom. It was all about them but it's great exposure for us. Chris is a really good guy.”
News of the surprise performance comes after Coldplay was named the most popular touring artists of the millennium. Based on ticket sales from January 1, 2001, to the end of 2025, the band topped the list with 24.8 million tickets sold.
U2 came second with 20.2 million tickets sold while Ed Sheeran followed with 19.6 million, according to trade publication Pollstar.
In another ranking, Coldplay's Christmas Lights single came second on a list of the most streamed 21st century British Christmas song. It was beaten to the top spot by Leona Lewis's One More Sleep.
Lily Allen's cover of Keane's Somewhere Only We Know, which was used in the 2013 John Lewis Christmas advert, was third; Ed Sheeran and Sir Elton John's Merry Christmas came fourth and Alexandra Burke's cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah was fifth.
Meanwhile, Coldplay on Saturday wished Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke a happy 100th birthday, describing him as “one of the most wonderful people in the whole world”.
Van Dyke starred in the band's video for the single All My Love from their album Moon Music, which was released in October last year.
A post on Coldplay's Instagram read: “Happy 100th birthday to one of the most wonderful people in the whole world.”
