Why I don’t regret buying a Nintendo Switch 2 this year – Reader’s Feature

After buying a Switch 2 in June, a reader describes his experiences of the console and what he thinks of games such as Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza.

I’ve heard a lot of negativity in regards to the Switch 2 but my personal experience is only positive. Here’s my time spent with the Switch 2 so far.

The console itself

Although I hadn’t planned on getting the console till later down the line, I managed to get a decent deal and it was a birthday and Xmas present, with me pitching in with some money I had saved. I got it delivered a week or so after launch, along with Mario Kart World and Street Fighter 6.

For me, I never had the OLED version of the Switch, so it was an immediate upgrade and I’m happy with the bigger screen. I already have a handheld PC but found that the Switch 2 is just more accessible, as you don’t have to mess about with tweaking settings or worry whether a game will work well, as games tend be already optimised.

The games

Mario Kart World

Personally, I enjoy the new Mario Kart World for what it is. The new Knockout Tour is great fun and I also like that the Grand Prix is more varied, as tracks don’t always repeat the same course three times and instead have three laps that are different from point A to B, rather than a loop. Free Roam is also a good concept. However, it would be useful if you could use gold coins to pay for locations of points of interest, as sometimes I find I drive around a while without finding any challenges or collectables.

Street Fighter 6

I wasn’t massively sold on the Street Fighter 6 single-player experience but have played some games against my youngest daughter who always seems to beat me. It looks and plays really well.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

I’d already played through Tears Of The Kingdom previously but started a new game. Tears Of The Kingdom isn’t quite as good as Breath Of The Wild but is still a worthy sequel. The Switch 2 is still the same great game, albeit slightly more shiny and smoother.

Cyberpunk 2077

I sold my original Switch not long after getting the Switch 2 and got Cyberpunk and had money left over. I’d played Cyberpunk before but never managed to get very far. I’ve got further this time than I have before, but still am, I imagine, only one-third of the way through. I like the aesthetic and general tone but am less invested in the gameplay. The netrunning and hacking confuses me, so essentially I’m playing it like a first person shooter when it comes to combat. I need to give it another go in the new year.

Donkey Kong Bananza

I was sold on this game following the first trailer and got it for my birthday. Although it’s a very good game I don’t know if it’s a great one. The first few levels I was hooked but by the end I felt it dragged a bit and got a bit repetitive. Personally, I don’t think the later levels had the same appeal and charm and I would’ve preferred bigger worlds to explore but less of them. Despite my issues I would still recommended the game.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4

I’m old enough to remember the original series, so this is a great bit of nostalgia. Annoyingly the game was a code in the box, but I only paid about £20 so can’t complain. I need to finish it at some point, but I do struggle with the later levels since I’m not particularly skilled at the game. However, I had a blast with the earlier levels.

Hogwarts Legacy

Another game I picked up for around £15. Whereas the earlier parts of the game are more varied in terms of mission types, such as attending classes, taking part in minigames, learning to ride your broom, etc. the last few missions seemed to involve battling wave after wave of enemy, which for me felt like a slog. Although to be fair, the combat is actually decent and the game is overall very good. At some point I’d like to go back to it and finish some more side content.

Star Wars Outlaws

This possibly might be the game I’ve enjoyed the most this year. I definitely think it deserves more love. The combat and gunplay is fun and plays well; the stealth, platforming, some puzzles, and exploration are also enjoyable. Having a few different elements of gameplay keeps things feeling varied and held my attention. Although it’s a different lead character, this is essentially a Han Solo simulator. Perhaps it’s the way I played it but sneaking into an imperial/enemy base, getting caught, and then having to shoot your way out and barely escaping nailed the feeling of being Han Solo.

So there you have it. Personally, I’m happy with my Switch 2. I think one benefit for me is that it might become my first choice platform for third party games, as I like being able to play games in bed before going to sleep of a night. I already plan to get Resident Evil Requiem and Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and possibly either Final Fantasy 7 Remake or Indiana Jones And The Great Circle.
