The co-writers have been working on an eight part series for Apple TV+
Over the years, Gavin and Stacey which was co-written by Ruth Jones and James Corden (or Nessa and Smithy), has become quite the cult classic, and is much-loved by fans across the world. Now, the duo are collaborating on a fresh project for Apple TV+.
The pair are currently on tour with their book event, “When Gavin Met Stacey And Everything In Between”, where they’ve been discussing their time working on the show. Whilst speaking at the event at Cardiff’s Utilita Arena on Sunday, January 11, 2026 they revealed more about their new series which will be called ‘The Choir’.
In a clip shared to TikTok, Ruth Jones joked: “Well we are writing a series for Apple TV. If you haven’t got Apple then you can’t watch it.” For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter.
The actress continued: “It’s about a choir and we both… James’s mum is in a community choir, my sister’s in a choir. And we both feel that choirs, like amateur choirs especially, bring people together in a way that maybe nothing else does.
“You’ve got people, you’ve got the joy of music, you don’t have to understand with songs, you could be in another language, but you get moved by the music. And there was just this idea of being able to bring a group of characters together from different backgrounds, all sorts of different things going on in their lives but that once a week rehearsal when they’re all there and they get to sing a really gorgeous song we just thought would be quite lovely.”
James added: “Yeah, and to really just try and make a show about community and the importance of community, the importance people who meet that.”
He then teased: “Is anyone here in a choir? Are you around at the latter half of the year, we might need some…”
The actor continued: “It’s just about a group of people who come together every week and enjoy and sing and really it’s about the life that’s within that.
“We’re playing siblings, so again, doing anything we can to ever avoid being intimate or romantic on screen.”
In September 2025, Deadline revealed that the long-time friends and co-writers were developing an eight-part series titled ‘The Choir’.
The publication suggested the plot would revolve around estranged siblings Ben (Corden) and Lisa (Jones). Ben, who has been residing overseas, returns to a small English town where Lisa lives, finding himself forced to “return to a life he never wanted” in a place he did not like.
The Sun later reported that Apple TV+ had secured the rights to the series in a deal rumoured to be worth £8 million, although Ruth subsequently downplayed these claims.
Addressing journalists at the National Television Awards in September, she stated: “There is nothing to announce. Nothing has been signed. It was a leak. That’s all I can say.”
Joanna Page, who portrayed Stacey in the hit sitcom Gavin and Stacey, confessed she doesn’t anticipate being cast in the new series.
Speaking to Closer magazine, she said: “I just think they are really, really lovely. I’m very excited to see what the next new thing is going to be.
“Because I’m so well-known from Gavin and Stacey and that whole bubble, I doubt very much that they’d want to bring that into something else.
“But obviously, my God, I would love to work with them again because they are so much fun.”
