Cardiff City star finally returns after near three-year wait
Alex Robertson finally ended his long wait for an Australia return as Cardiff City’s stars enjoyed a productive international window.
The midfielder, whose fine form has been a major part of City’s promotion push this season, featured again for the Socceroos for the first time since June 2023, ending an absence of almost three years from the international stage. Robertson had first been recalled after a lengthy spell out in March, having not played for Australia since his second cap under Graham Arnold.
After watching from the bench in Australia’s 1-0 win over Cameroon, Robertson was introduced in the closing stages of the 5-1 victory over Curaçao, coming on in the 81st minute to mark a welcome return in green and gold.
There was also a landmark moment for Joel Colwill, who made his first senior Wales start in the friendly draw with Northern Ireland after Dylan Lawlor had impressed in the World Cup qualifying play-off defeat on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Lawlor’s evening was cut short by injury, however, with Ethan Ampadu replacing him.
At under-21 level, Cian Ashford started Wales’ 2-0 qualifying win over Belarus before keeping his place against Denmark, which saw Wales suffer a heavy 4-0 defeat. Tanatswa Nyakuhwa, currently on loan at Newport, also featured off the bench, while Luey Giles, on loan at Eastleigh, was an unused substitute in the second match.
Cardiff’s academy pipeline was again strongly represented in the age-grade ranks.
At under-19 level, Jac Thomas and Jake Davies both started in Wales’ defeat to the United States, while at under-18 level Noah Williams captained his country in all three fixtures during the break.
Axel Donczew, Jack Sykes, Paul Moreno and Hayden Allmark all also gained valuable minutes as Wales drew with France, beat Switzerland and then fell to Hungary.

Statement issued after ‘appalling’ comments
The Genero Adran Leagues has issued a strongly-worded statement condemning the “sexist and misogynistic” comments that emerged following Cardiff City Women’s clash with Wrexham.
The match at the Cae Ras on Sunday saw Wrexham win 4-1 to clinch the Adran Premier title for the first time, booking their spot in next season’s Champions League qualifying phase in doing so.
The clash was billed as a landmark occasion for women’s football in Wales, featuring the country’s two leading teams in front of the season’s highest attendance.
But the focus has since shifted away from the action on the pitch after what the league described as “appalling” abuse in the aftermath of the fixture. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community.
In a statement released on social media, the Genero Adran Leagues said it was “appalled by the sexist and misogynistic comments” that followed the game.
It read: “Sunday’s game at the Cae Ras was a magnificent and inspiring occasion for women’s football in Wales.
“This year’s two best teams competing in an exciting contest, in front of the season’s highest attendance. That should be the leading headline.
“These comments have no place in football and society, and those who make them are not welcome at our clubs and stadia.”
Craig Bellamy offers Dylan Lawlor injury update
Craig Bellamy has moved quickly to ease fears over Dylan Lawlor after the Cardiff City youngster was forced off during Wales’ draw with Northern Ireland last night.
Lawlor was introduced at half-time and helped Wales improve after the break, but his evening was cut short just 15 minutes later when he had to be withdrawn, prompting immediate concern given his growing importance for both club and country.
The Bluebirds defender has impressed during this international window and is expected to play a key role in Cardiff’s League One promotion run-in.
But Bellamy insists the decision to take him off was purely precautionary.
“He took a kick,” the Wales boss explained. “He wanted to stay on, but I’m like, ‘no. You’ve got a run-in that you need to be a part of’, and we have Ethan as well.
“I’m sure he’ll be fine.
“But why would I take the chance? I’d love him to be part of a promotion team. What that would do for his development as well would be incredible for him, and the club he’s at as well.”
Ramsey reunites with ex-Cardiff team-mates after announcement
Aaron Ramsey has been spotted enjoying time with his Cardiff City team-mates after revealing his latest sporting challenge away from football.
Bluebirds winger Ollie Tanner shared a photo on Tuesday of Ramsey teeing off at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, with fellow Cardiff players Calum Chambers and Ryan Wintle also tagged in the round. Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here.
Ramsey is a keen golfer, having recently taken part in the Icons Series Golf Tournament, representing Team World with ex-Wales internationals Ryan Giggs and Gareth Bale.
The image offered a glimpse of Ramsey back among familiar faces as uncertainty continues to surround his playing future.
It comes just days after the Wales captain announced he will run next month’s London Marathon in aid of children’s cancer charity It’s Never You.
The 35-year-old, whose football career has been on hold since his last appearance for Mexican side Pumas in September 2025, said he was inspired to take on the challenge after being moved by the story behind the Hertfordshire-based charity.
Ramsey is raising funds in memory of Hugh, a six-year-old boy who died from cancer, and said the charity’s work supporting families facing childhood illness had motivated him to step outside his comfort zone. Ramsey’s fundraising page for the marathon has so far raised £550.
What the future holds for Ramsey on the football pitch remains unclear, with the goal always said to be for him to play for Wales at the World Cup this summer.
Following Wales’ defeat in the play-off match with Bosnia-Herzegovina last Thursday, uncertainty surrounding his playing days will no doubt intensify.
