It might be a little pricier, but it’s worth the extra money – even if it’s just for a treat every once in a while.
The cost of the weekly shop keeps on rising, like most things these days. However, it’s crucial to ensure you’re buying enough healthy groceries to provide balanced meals and snacks throughout the week.
I’m sure I’m not alone in noticing the creeping costs over the past few years, which is why I aim to keep my food bill manageable by being savvy about where I shop. As much as I’d love buying everything from M&S, it’s often seen as one of the more expensive supermarkets, so I usually stick to Aldi and Lidl.
However, there’s one particular item that I always purchase from M&S, despite its higher price tag, and in my view, it’s worth every penny.
If you’ve kicked off the New Year with the goal of eating healthier, you’ve likely been browsing the fruit and veg aisles of your local supermarket, selecting various options for snacking and meal preparation.
One fruit I find highly underrated is the kiwi, and I had been regularly purchasing this fuzzy green fruit from Aldi and Lidl for months when I came across something slightly different at M&S, reports the Express.
The golden kiwi has a smooth skin in a lovely golden-brown colour, and instead of being green on the inside, it’s a vibrant yellow. They are pricier, with a four-pack costing around £3, whereas the pack of four I buy from Aldi typically costs £1.39 – so they are more than double the price.
On a particular day when I fancied a treat, I decided to purchase them and put them in the fridge when I got home. A few days later, while making breakfast, I noted how different they looked and felt both inside and outside.
However, it was the taste that really shocked me. Regular kiwis have a slightly bitter taste, even when fully ripe, which isn’t to everyone’s liking.
But these golden kiwis were a world apart. The fruit was so sweet and juicy that it barely resembled a kiwi – it had more of a tropical flavour that instantly made me feel as if I was on holiday.
Every time I’ve bought golden kiwis, they’ve been perfectly ripe and ready to eat, which is something I really appreciate. And, if you can wait a couple of extra days, they actually become sweeter as they ripen.
Regular kiwis often take several days or even weeks to fully ripen once you bring them home, which isn’t ideal if you’re craving a healthy snack or a topping for your morning yoghurt bowl.
Their delicious taste is just one part of their appeal. According to the kiwi connoisseurs at Zespri, they’re rich in vitamin C, which helps in maintaining our immune systems’ normal function. Consuming just one of these daily fulfils 100 percent of this essential nutrient.
They’re also high in fibre, particularly the skin, which is edible – and requires significantly less chewing compared to regular green kiwis.
I truly have to restrain myself from devouring the entire pack of these as soon as I get home, considering £3 for four pieces of fruit is quite steep and I want them to last. However, if you haven’t tried these M&S kiwis yet, I can’t rave about them enough – I guarantee you’ll never revert to regular kiwis again.
