Wrexham target former £5m striker who was at centre of manager’s ‘nonsense’ rant

Wrexham have already been busy in the transfer window and are now looking to make a move for a former Premier League striker this summer as they prepare for life in the Championship

Wrexham are being linked with a move for Wales international Kieffer Moore as they prepare to tackle the Championship next term.

Boss Phil Parkinson has already secured four new arrivals this summer, initially bringing in striker Ryan Hardie from Plymouth and keeper Danny Ward from Leicester. The manager recently added left-back Liberato Cacace from Empoli and midfielder George Thomason from Bolton, while former Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass is also anticipated to complete his switch to the Red Dragons imminently.

Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds has vowed the club will be “as aggressive as we can possibly be” in the transfer window following their promotion from League One in April. Parkinson is now understood to have set his sights on Wales striker Moore, who currently plays for Sheffield United, as he looks to strengthen his attacking line-up.

Moore netted six times in 30 outings for the Blades in the second tier last season as they fell just short of Premier League promotion, losing to Sunderland in the Championship play-off final. While the 32-year-old remains under contract at Bramall Lane for another two years, United may consider his declining market value, as per The Sheffield Star.

Should Wrexham pursue Moore, they would be acquiring a player with top-flight experience from his time at Bournemouth, who he joined in January 2022 in a deal worth up to £5million. Despite his pedigree, Moore faced criticism from Blades fans early last season as he struggled for form in front of goal.

The club’s then-manager Chris Wilder defended him at the time, calling on supporters to rally behind the team. Speaking during an interview in September last year, Wilder said of Moore: “He’s a team player.

“We’ve played six games and won four and drew two. He’s led the line and worked tirelessly. I really don’t care where the goals come from. Just as long as we win games of football.

“Expectation levels, opinion split, or whatever… get behind the players, please. Let’s be together, let’s not start on any of that nonsense. Social media is yet again rearing its head. Get behind the boy. He gives everything for the team.

“Go and ask the players. Go and ask Callum O’Hare, go and ask Gus Hamer, go and ask Harry Souttar, go and ask Alan Knill, go and ask Jack Lester, what they think of Kieffer Moore. They’d all give the same answer.”

Welcome to Wrexham is back on Disney+ for a fourth season. Fans can watch the series with a £4.99 monthly plan, or get 12 months for the price of 10 by paying for a year upfront.

Moore came under scrutiny again following United’s 2-1 defeat at Wembley in May after giving the ball away in the build-up to Sunderland’s late winner. Wilder, who left the Blades in June, continued to defend him, insisting that Moore’s season should not be judged solely on that error.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “His performance and his contribution this season shouldn’t be defined by that. None of us should be defined by that. We got 92 points and that gets you up most seasons.

“I’ve always said that the highs are a lot higher and the lows are a lot lower [as a United fan]. It stung yesterday but I’ve got a beautiful family supporting me, I’ve got magic pals.”

He added: “I’ve got really good people around me and I’m at a fabulous football club. I know there’ll be a little bit of negativity, I get that and I think social media amps that up, a thousand per cent.”
