In a Nigerian music scene bursting with talent, Noonzi born Aminu Idris and raised in Lagos with roots in Zaria, Kaduna State is carving a lane that feels both excitingly new and warmly familiar. His sound, a fusion of R&B, Afrobeats, and Jazz, strikes a balance between soulful nostalgia and contemporary energy. It’s a formula that’s resonating fast his latest single, “Maria”, has already surpassed 50,000 streams on Spotify, marking a significant step in his journey from school choir singer to rising star.
Noonzi’s story begins in the primary school choir, where early performances hinted at the stage presence and vocal range that would later define his artistry. Influenced by global icons like Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey, he developed a style that blends heartfelt emotion with irresistible rhythm. Over the years, he has built a catalogue that includes tracks such as Anything, Shake U, Love U, Do You Feel Me, Beautiful, and Chop Am, along with his Can’t Stop EP.
“Maria” released in mid-2025 and produced in Lagos with hitmaker Willis captures the magnetic pull of romance through a chorus that lingers long after the song ends. With its infectious groove and relatable storytelling, the track has become both a streaming success and a sneak peek into Noonzi’s much-anticipated debut album, due later this year.
Speaking on his creative process, Noonzi credits positive energy, good weather, great company, and love as key ingredients in his songwriting. “These elements play a huge role in my creative process,” he says. But the path hasn’t been without hurdles. Industry criticism, he admits, is something he encounters often, but instead of letting it derail him, he uses it to grow: “It’s not always negative. I believe it makes you better in so many ways.”
Looking ahead, Noonzi has his sights set on collaborations with names like Tiwa Savage, Muni Long, Davido, Tyla, and Chris Brown. He also openly reflects on lessons learned particularly the importance of marketing and is determined to position his music for global reach.
For Noonzi, quitting has never been an option. “Music was always therapy and a passion,” he says with conviction. And with “Maria” gaining momentum, an album promising themes of love, celebration, humanity, and peace, and a sound that’s both fresh and familiar, the young artist seems poised to become one of most exciting musical exports.
