The long-running BBC medical drama was put out to tender earlier this year
It looks as though there’s good news for fans of Casualty as the BBC have recently shared an update on its future.
Since the medical drama first began back in 1986, viewers have seen the trials and tribulations that unravel for the staff and patients at the Accident & Emergency department of the fictional Holby City Hospital.
Earlier this year, the 39th series came to a dramatic end, with fans being treated to a miniseries titled Supply and Demand, which featured the first few episodes of series 40.
Casualty was put out to tender in May 2025, with BBC Studios winning the contract to produce the beloved series. The contract is for three series with filming due to start in Spring 2026.
The BBC have stated that the show will be set in Cardiff as well as continuing to be filmed there.

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, says: “Casualty is a hugely important, much-loved BBC drama and this tender has ensured it will continue to flourish.
“It was an extremely competitive process, and we would like to thank the shortlisted producers for their high-quality and comprehensive proposals. We look forward to working with BBC Studios as we build on the show’s long-running success.”

“The sheer scale of the portrayal of Wales – in character and place is a game changer. BBC Studios fired our imaginations, and we look forward to where they take the world of Casualty next.”
BBC viewers don’t have long to wait for the return of the medical soap as it’s been confirmed to air on January 10.

The tense final episode had people fearing for Ngozi Okoye’s (Adesuwa Oni) life after a tragic twist saw her plans to leave with her son Obi end tragically.
Following the news of its return, people were quick to comment on the upcoming series as one person wrote on their Facebook announcement: “Will be interested to see what happens to Ngozi Okoye given the incident with the alcohol relapse at the airport at the end of the last series – what a cliffhanger! I hope she pulls through & has a happy life with Nicole Pipe.”
Someone else said: “Thank goodness. Something good to watch on Saturday evenings again. It’s been such a long break so hope everyone has had a good rest. xx”
While another commented: “Thank god for that, missed it loads, Saturday night tv just isn’t the same without it.”
